The Rainwater HOG: Get As Much As You Can Handle

The tank was designed by award-winning Australian designer and architectural practitioner Sally Dominguez. Originally seeking to design a low profile horizontal tank for use under decks and patios at inner-city properties where space was at a premium, Sally was told by tank salespeople that a 'flat' plastic tank would not work - and she set out to prove them wrong. Using the continuous walls of a center hole to brace a wide plastic box was a new concept in rainwater storage which has now been adopted by many other tank designers. Once Sally had designed a working horizontal tank she was determined to make the HOG as useful as possible - so she re-engineered it with several smaller bracing through-holes to create a narrow, space-saving module which could hold and conduit water in any direction without causing pooling or ponding. HOG was named when rainwater was still considered "grey" water - hence the name H2O Grey or H2OG.

HOG tank fits into spaces where other tanks do not, and its compact size allows it to be easily retrofitted and then connected up once in situ for larger volumes of rainwater storage in tight spaces - along side passages, below houses, and under decks. Not only was the HOG sized to fit between joists spaced at 600mm (24 inch) centers, but it was also sized for maximum thickness (9 1/2 inches/220mm) while also keeping useful thermal mass characteristics. Any thicker and the thermal benefit would be impaired, any thinner and the capacity would be inconsequential. The tank will support its full weight on any of its surfaces without bulging, which allows it to be installed either horizontally or vertically for rainwater capture. Not other water tank is designed to be so versatile.

Connector Kit

This kit is normally included with the purchase of a HOG. The air vent allows air in the HOG tank to escape as it fills with rainwater. With proper ventilation, as provided by the air vent, water will flow from the tank in a strong, smooth stream. Be sure to install the top portion of the vent above the lowest portion of your gutter overflow, otherwise water will spill out of the vent when the system is completely full.

If you have more than one HOG installed, connect your modular HOG system with threaded connectors. The connectors, which conduit the water between tanks, enable each tank in the system to fill simultaneously with an equal level of water.

This Kit Includes

threaded connector
air vent

Inlet Outlet Kit

The Inlet Outlet Kit is recommended for all HOG installations. The meshed inlet screen filters debris from the opening which allows rainwater to enter the tanks from the gutter or rain chain. It's also easy to clean! Control the flow of water to your garden by connecting a hose or drip-line irrigation system to the ball valve. The outlet ball valve acts as an on/off nozzle, allowing water to exit the HOG when open, and effectively sealing the HOG full of its supply of rainwater when shut.

This Kit Includes

meshed inlet screen
plastic outlet ball valve

Wall Kit

The Wall Kit is recommended for all vertical HOG installations. This kit stabilizes the HOG laterally, and is NOT intended to carry any weight. Wall-mounted HOGs must be installed so that the weight is supported on a firm surface, with the weight bearing on the ground or another stable structure.

The Wall Kit provides aesthetic appeal with structural integrity and improved functionality. The circular plate forms the "O" on the HOG tank, discreetly covering the nuts and bolts holding the tank in place against the wall. Gravity supplies enough water pressure to a vertically installed HOG system for watering plants on an elevated deck, and in raised planter or window boxes.

This Kit Includes

circular plate
dome nut
threaded rod
spring nut
200mm length of unistrut (bracket)

Materials

The Rainwater HOG modular tank is rotomolded in virgin polyethylene which complies with AS2070. The HOG is molded of food grade plastic which complies with FDA and HPB regulatory standards for food contact. However, Australian and USA law state that rainwater should not be used for drinking water. The water from your roof can be contaminated with animal and vegetable matter which needs to be filtered from stored water before it is fit for consumption. The fact that off grid communities and rural areas do use rainwater for drinking purposes demonstrates that it is possible if the right collection and filtration measures are taken. Generally in suburban and urban areas it is not permitted to harvest rainwater for drinking or other potable use apart from toilet flush and laundry wash. The tank material itself is 100 % recyclable and has been designed to last you a lifetime.

Size

Each Rainwater HOG tank manufactured in Australia has a capacity of 180 liters, and the following dimensions: 500mm x 220mm x 1800mm. The HOG weighs approximately 18 kg when empty and 200 kg when full.

Each Rainwater HOG tank manufactured in the US has a capacity of 51 gallons and the following dimensions: 20" x 9.5" x 71". The HOG weighs approximately 40 lbs when empty and 440 lbs when full.

Colors

The Rainwater HOG is currently available in the standard tank color of Bronze Olive Green, but can be produced in almost any other color for orders of 20 or more units. To name a few exciting color options, we have produced red, orange, black, white, and lime green HOGs. Please be advised that we do not paint the HOGs to make them different colors - the Rainwater HOG is manufactured by our factory in the chosen color.

Mix 'n' Match

The Rainwater HOG is designed to work with conventional connection components which are individually guaranteed by the manufacturers. But since our connection points are a brass 1 " NPT /24mm thread, you can work with our suggested parts - or simply buy your own.

Complete your Rainwater HOG installation with accessories that make for easy, no-fuss rainwater harvesting. Threaded brass inserts at the top and bottom of each HOG allows secure attachment of connectors, vents, and outlets. The HOG is designed to work with conventional connection components which are individually guaranteed by the manufacturers. The Connector Kit is normally included with each purchase of a HOG. The Inlet Outlet Kit and the Wall Kit are optional purchases.
